About Conservation Areas

In the Yukon, land may be protected under any one of several pieces of legislation including the Yukon Parks and Land Certainty Act, the Wildlife Act, the Inuvialuit Final Agreement, and First Nation Land Claim Agreements. Federally, the Canada Wildlife Act also protects an area of land.

The legislation determines whether the designated land becomes a park, preserve, protection area, etc. Further, areas titled Territorial Parks may have one or more land conservation classifications in their makeup.

Internationally, conservation areas are classified using the World Conservation Union (IUCN) categories.
