Water Inspections Unit
The primary duty of the Water Inspections Unit is to enforce compliance with the Waters Act and Regulations. This includes identifying concerns with project descriptions submitted for environmental assessment, as well recommending water use licence operating conditions, and monitoring and promoting compliance with those licences.
Water Inspectors conduct inspections on both licensed and unlicensed undertakings which are classified under eight types:
- Industrial
- Quartz mining
- Municipal
- Hydroelectric
- Agriculture
- Conservation
- Recreational
- Miscellaneous (e.g. bridges, culverts, pipeline crossings)
Water Use Licences for placer mining projects are monitored by Mining Inspectors.
The licensing process is conducted by the Yukon Water Board which can issue two types of Water Use Licences:
-
Type A licences for major or significant water uses.
- Type B licences for minor water uses.
*see schedules in Water Regulations for Type A & Type B licensing criteria.
Water Inspection Officers are also responsible for responding to complaints and public concerns on possible water use and waste disposal violations; acting as Environmental Protection Officers.
