Porcupine Caribou Herd
Interim Conservation Measures

Porcupine Caribou / Environment Yukon Photo
The Yukon government has serious conservation concerns about the Porcupine Caribou Herd's declining population. Unless action is taken now, there will be an accelerated decline in the herd's population, which used to be 178,000 caribou, and is now believed to be between 90,000 and 100,000 animals.
The Yukon government is required under all northern land claims agreements, as well as the Porcupine Caribou Management Agreement, to manage wildlife resources for their long term sustainable use.
The Yukon government has implemented immediate conservation measures to protect the Porcupine Caribou Herd until an approved harvest management plan is accepted and implemented by the Parties to the Porcupine Caribou Management Agreement.
