Trapping Regulations Highlights
For more information, download the Trapping Regulations Summary 2006-07 (PDF, 800 Kb)
7 day trap check for killing traps
A new regulation is now in force allowing trappers up to 7 days to check their killing trap sets. This makes it easier for trappers who hold other employment over the winter. Trappers who wish to exercise this should maintain separate lines with killing or restraining sets as the trap check period for restraining sets remains at 5 days.
Guided Trapping Permit
In accordance with the Wildlife Act and the Wilderness Tourism Licensing Act, new trapping regulations permit a trapping concession holder to operate a guided trapping operation on their trapping concession. See page 18 for more information.
Agreement on International Humane Trapping Standards comes into force in October 2007
Regulations bringing trap use in line with the AIHTS agreement will require that, as of October 1, 2007, trappers use only those trap models which have been certified. Trappers should be checking the list of certified traps and start pulling out of the bush those traps which will not be permitted as of next season.
The Agreement has a three phase implementation. (See page 6 for more information.) Trappers should inform themselves through pamphlets, trapper’s magazines, attendance at information sessions, and other communications this winter.
