Big Game: Moose

There are about 65,000 to 70,000 moose in the Yukon. Overall numbers are thought to be stable or slowly increasing – a positive outlook.

Some areas of concern exist, however. While the Yukon-wide harvest is believed to be within the estimated sustainable limit of 2000 to 2800 moose per year, the harvest in a few areas is near, or may exceed, what is sustainable. These are usually areas with relatively easy access and high hunting pressure.

The public’s assistance with ground based monitoring and providing local knowledge is greatly appreciated. With approximately 15 to 20 high priority moose areas identified throughout the Yukon, we cannot survey each of them very often. Consequently the Department’s ongoing efforts to monitor high priority moose populations throughout the Yukon are based on a combination of surveys, ground based monitoring, and local knowledge.

You can obtain the results of past surveys and other moose studies by contacting a Regional Biologist or Moose Management Biologist Richard Ward at (867) 667-5787.
