In the North, children playing outdoors and exploring their surroundings – even near home – can be at risk of encountering a bear. It is important to educate children to be “Bear Aware” and to understand what to do if they encounter a bear.
Let’s all be bear aware.
Here’s how…
- Never feed bears
- Report bears that hang around people or get into garbage.
- Never get too close to bears.
- Hike in groups and make noise so you don’t surprise a bear.Keep a clean camping spot.
- Never explore bad smelling areas and never play near garbage dumps.
- Learn more about bears.
Facts
- Often a child’s first thought is to “play dead.” As a first response, this is incorrect, and is only warranted in certain situations. In some circumstances, playing dead may encourage a bear to be more aggressive.
